OK. Newest kernel seems to have fixed it.
After the update the computer is now on, and it's working like in the
old days ;-)

Well, now I started the computer again; still this error. I see that
there's a new kernel update, maybe it'll fix it.
As I said, it has been working with the older kernels, so jaunty worked
fine before. It's no use changing to karmic yet, these are work
computers, and I need to test and run Karmic

It would be interesting to know if this remains with the latest Karmic
9.10 Beta which contains a much newer 2.6.31 based kernel -
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . Indeed there are some
really strange oddities in your logs. For one, your BootDmesg shows
you're running a 2.6.
Oh, by the way, rather essential: when I open terminals, it doesn't
work!
Some PTY / TTY-problem (I don't really know what that is, but something
to do with terminals ;) )?
