I ask about this and got this answer:
out of all things I thought of live booting from the same CD I used to install
ubuntu and 10 bugs I had with ubuntu on hard disk did not exist in the
live-boot session. The 10 bugs that did not exist:
1)screen refresh not consistent, SDL suffers
2) usplash
xorglog

I have problems too, occurs with Dell's GX 270 desktop computers using the
default built in video cards I use Ubuntu 8.10
It happens to Totem too
Goes away if you use a ATI video card

OK. After i read about this bug being closed, i upgraded to hardy to
see, if i can reproduce the behaviour there. And voila, it still occurs.
However i'm getting used to it:(.

Well, somehow i must have overread the last comments when they arrived in my
