I'm afraid I have to disagree that this issue is due to a failed
upgrade.

I tried a clean install of devede where all the dependencies had to be
fetched from official repositories and I can reproduce this issue
exactly.

When I upgraded from intrepid to karmic RC, vlc and totem stopped being
able to display the video of xvid files. The audio worked, but an error
came up that no codec could be found.
Fixed by replacing libavcodec-extra-52 (and libavcodec-unstripped-52?)
with libavcodec52. Not sure why the upgrade
Sorry, can't reproduce bug anymore, installed karmic beta again and not
tried openshot on it. And now mlpayer and vlc are working just fine.

+1 Me too; running the plain Karmic beta. No additional source or other
other PPA's.
Also affects mencoder; that program exits with the same error msg:
mencoder: symbol lookup error: mencoder: undefined symbol: codec_wav_tags
