I cannot say whether or not this is still an issue. I just disabled the
proprietary driver for my software modem as I rarely used it and the
sound worked after a reboot.
I am currently running another distro on the laptop so I'll toss in a

The latest 2.6.31-14 kernel and pulseaudio 0.9.19 seem to have corrected
the problem for me. I used a usb headset before the latest kernel and
pulseaudio. Try updating to see if this works for you.

One thing that will greatly assist me in diagnosing this symptom is to
confirm that, prior to logging via gdm, the desired mixer levels are muted
or zeroed.
Please reboot, and switch to a text console instead of logging in via a
graphical greeter. Login via getty, and use amixer or alsamixer to ve

I did not find Master Volume in the usually Sound settings? The volume

I was able to remedy by running "alsamixer", but isn't this an overly-
obtuse method for the masses? Maybe I missed the simpler solution(s).

Thanks for the tip, really cool program I was unaware of. Ran the
command you listed and it output "No additional information collected".
Re-ran it as "apport-collect 441944" (no "-p alsa-base) and it uploaded
some attachments. Hope it helps.
