This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

It is an ASUS DRW-2014L1T.
Just then, I ran nautilus as root. As soon as I did this, the CD drive
spun up and showed the contents of the directory with no problem. I
don't really know what this means, but I suspect it make fixing the
problem easier.

This seems like it's probably a hardware-specific issue, so could you
specify what CD/DVD drive you have, or, if it's a standard model, what
computer you have?
