- First install Compiz Settings Manager:
sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager
- Open the settings manager from Systems menu > Preferences > CompizConfig

- On the right under Desktop category click on Viewport Switcher
- Switch to "Desktop-Based Viewport Switching"
This is most likely a default settings change, though I'm not sure if it
was purposefully done or not.
I'm not totally sure where this setting comes from. Even when this
works, it's not listed in System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts on
Jaunty. Anyone have any ideas?

Whatever i choose in appearance preference's visual effect dialog (no
effect/normal/extra), the wheel doesn't switch desktop.
