You received this bug notification because you are
I attempted to play around with it today and attempted to remove and
install pulseaudio from the latest source with no success.
Here's the basic results.
it required the following packages to be added.
m4
intltool
sndfile-programs
libsndfile1-dev
libspeexdsp-dev
./configure, make and installed
I also noticed that volume level in front-left channel is about three
times lower than in front-right channel. This happens with my 5.1
soundcard (usb device) and with my laptops integrated stereo soundcard
(hda nvidia).
top...@topias-laptop:~$ aplay -l

For me the problem has existed since alpha 1 or 2.

Just a thought, I wonder if this is something new with the latest build
of Karmic, as I haven't found any previous mention of it. If so, I'd be
curious to see what changes have been made to see if it is possible to
revert some of it.

There's a thread in the Ubuntu forum about this bug. The latest post has
a few ideas to try. I haven't had a chance to play with them yet, but I
will give it a go tomorrow.

I noticed this bug too. Before I have edited /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to
get 5.1 sounds work (just like you Neil wrote) but with 9.10 it doesn't
help. I really hope this bug could be fixed before the final release,
now there is no way to get sounds out with 5.1 hardware.

Karmic 5.1 sound choppy,
Same here :( Right now, karmic and pulse are nothing but trouble for me.
As well as this problem the sound quality from the 5.1 is also really
really really poor.
