Since I didn't update my workstation yet, I cannot confirm if the bug
really is fixed.
Assuming that it's fixed, I would vote for closing the bug.

Bugs,
It seems it was fixed in 10.04 (lucid lynx). After a fresh install of RC
release, simply installing ttf-droid package made the alias work, no
need to change configuration in /etc/fonts.
Could we close this as fixed or should backport something to 9.10
(karmic koala)?

Tried. That does not seem to fix the problem.
Reinstall, remove /etc/fonts/conf.d/66-wqy-zenhei-sharp.conf, rebuild
the font-cache and restart, and the problem is back. Remove the
package, rebuild the font cache, and restart, and my font.conf is
working as expected again.

@SamFreilich:
can you reinstall ttf-wqy-zenhei and then remove /etc/fonts/conf.d/66
-wqy-zenhei-sharp.conf, and tell me if you still have this issue?
if that can fix the problem, I believe this is a duplicate of
Bug#475240, and should be fixed by removing this 66-*conf file.

Alias in ~/.font
Ack, I should clarify the above. I mean, removing ttf-wqy-zenhei indeed
fixes things.

I've read #387848 and fixed this bug in this way:
cd /etc/fonts/conf.d/
sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/50-user.conf 39-user.conf
Later you could restore old situation simply deleting file

Updated today to Karmic. I can confirm this bug. Please fix! This is the
only sane way for advanced users to set system fonts globally.

Found that /etc/fonts/conf.d/44-wqy-zenhei.conf is different between
Karmic and Jaunty.
Commented away the serif/sans-serif/monospace aliases from that file.
Now ~/.fonts.conf should work.

Alexander, the issue still exists in my Karmik test install. It's a
fresh install in a separate partition, I simply copied .fonts.conf
attacched in my previous comment from "stable" home partition (not used
in test install).
So I think this bug is still open. Please check on a clean karmic
install
there wasnt a fontconfig update for a while, so if it was fixed it must
have been a side-effect.
