I get a black screen with a blinking cursor for 6 seconds or so (it used
to say "Starting up..." before I upgraded to GRUB 2). Then I get boot
messages that slowly appear in Ubuntu's console font. Only late into the
boot process do I get the xsplash progress spinner.
I'm attaching the boot message
I've unmarked some duplicates, because those are specific errors that
most likely have to be fixed on a case-by-case basis.

I marked a few other bugs as duplicates of this one, as they have in
common complaining about text being displayed before xsplash starts.
Some of them mention specific source of the message (nvidia, ACPI, ...),
but I believe this bug (if it is a bug) should be fixed in a unified way
