My understanding is that because of 10.4 LTS release Karmic became a
very low priority for Ubuntu developers. I guess we just have to either
wait for 9.10's specific patch or eventually upgrade to 10.4 in like 6
months or so (when it gets stable enough) :-(

Don't now if the patch is supposed to work in Karmic but it didn't work
for me. I installed the packages from the PPA, rebooted, put the
computer into standby, woke it up and after about a minute it froze.

This exact same problem happens with me. I'm using Ubuntu Karmic,
kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic. I use an ATI Radeon X800 (Chip R420) video
card using open source drivers, and after using either GIMP or
OpenOffice the whole screen will freeze and only the mouse will move--
though nothing can be click

P4 3.06 D-HT, 2GB Ram, Radeon 5250, was duel booting XP, 9.04 ext4.
New install boots Karmic fine but minutes to a hour later freezes,

I switched compiz off, I reverted to xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4 and I
decided to never hibernate or suspend. And freezes still happen everyday
or so.

I am confirming this bug as described by the original poster.
The system is a Dell Dimension 2400. The graphics chipset is by Intel

I can confirm this bug, also happening in a Acer TravelMate 5730.
Freezes happen after being suspended, within 0-6 hours after resuming
it. If I don't suspend, the machine runs smoothly.
Also for suspending it I have to do it twice. The first time never
suspends, I just get the Screensaver. Then I

Last time my laptop worked for a couple of days. Today symptoms have
repeated. However, this time the screen became all purple. As usual I
could've move mouse cursor and could login into the computer.

I have IBM ThinkPad X41 with intel 915 video chipset. I'm using Gnome
and doesn't have either Compiz installed nor any effects enabled. The
problem has surfaced after some update back in 9.04. I'm seeing very
often (sometimes a couple time a day) after upgrade to 9.10. Been
running Ubuntu since 8.0
These symptoms seem to describe the problem I'm seeing with a recent
upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, and then to 9.10 on my Toshiba Tecra A3. The
Jaunty freezing was worse so I moved almost immediately to Karmic.
