By the way, in the situation described in comment #6 above, I did hear
audio in the checkbox test where it plays a sound file to the default
output--but only because I didn't follow the test directions and
modified my default audio settings. To wit, I unchecked mute on output
and increased volume

Karmic Koala Beta daily build 20091012 i386 Desktop demonstrates this
failure of System Testing (Checkbox) using internal sound system. The
problem has to do with integrating Checkbox into the audio path. I say
this because I subsequently opened up gnome-sound-recorder 2.28.1 and
recorded my voic

System > Preferences > Sound and select input tab.
Turn input volume to full.
Speaking or running finger over internal mic clearly indicates it is working,
but test does not playback audio.
System startup sounds, etc. function normally.
