Here is what worked for me.
apt-get -f install upstart
somehow upstart didn't finish installing and blocked hal from running.

Same as above, did apt-get upgrade this morning and no mouse, no keyboard. I
also tried to check my backup drive and I see in dmesg that it mounted to
/dev/sdc but there is no sdc in my dev directory . Maybe a udev problem.

Same serious problem here. Did the usual upgrade today and after reboot
no keyboard, no mouse. They both paralyzed right on the KDE login
screen. I am typing this from a live CD. Trying all options in rescue
mode, but to no avail. A real showstopper.
