Setting force_io=1 fixes the problem. But curious to see this issue
reemerged.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and it didn't help.

OK, I had hdaps loaded, but was getting an error loading tp_smapi. In
the logs, I saw:
karmic kernel: [98215.126609] thinkpad_ec: cannot claim IO ports
0x1600-0x161f... consider using force_io=1.
I ran:
$ sudo rmmod tp_smapi hdaps thinkpad_ec
ERROR: Module tp_smapi does not exist in /pro
