Thank you for responding. This is quite the blast from my past. I have
played with the the 18.04 package version and the latest git without
running into this issue again.

I think increasing the timeout in jack from 500 to 1000 ms solved my
problem

I want to confirm that zynaddsubfx is broken in this way in karmic.
The only thing that prevents zynaddsubfx from being zombified when
changing patches is giving it a higher realtime priority than jack with chrt
--fifo.

it as soon as possible as everything works
