I confirm this annoying bug. I would note that at least for me in
recovery mode does not update the package list, which leads to a
correction first "manual" by changing the configuration files from a
live cd besides the patch with an update. I also noticed that the
problem could also be linked to a

Same for me, Kubuntu Karmic alpha 5 on an Asus A6Vc notebook. The only button
working is the power button, and the system shuts down normally.
Recovery mode works, but Xorg and kdm logs don't report problems, as well as
system log.
