I'm tempted to believe ddcprobe is failing to recognize your monitor
correctly. Another possibility is that the resolution being selected is
only supported on 60Hz on your machine.
Anyhow, it would be nice if you could follow the (relevant) steps

http://www.cyskat.de/dee/progxorg.htm
Deb packages for ubuntu breezy and dapper are available :)
