Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I regret to have to report that,
having found an unorthodox solution already, I was unable to apply them.
Being an impatient beginner I removed the HDD from the laptop (Acer
Aspire 3630) on which the Jaunty installation failed and put it in
another laptop

Could you please attach this file
/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages
and remove it afterward from your system? Does that fix the issue?
