I agree - this seems to have been addressed with lucid at least, perhaps
before. See also some resulting confusion as related in bug 441942.

I have a similar issue, but for me the displayed number of messages that
is displayed adds up over the day. If I received 3 mails after first
login, move them to folders and receive 3 more mails later, it will
still display 6 received messages.
