i think i have stumbled upon a fix to the issue, looking at the logs it looks like it suspends fine but resumes with a blank screen. This is a bug in Xorg and to resolve it u need to get jaunty versions of the packages xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon. Install them using dpkg
