I knew about the unrar package but I thought that the right thing to do
was to submit a bug since most users won't have a clue what to do. I
stand corrected and will submit this to Ubuntu Brainstorm instead; sorry
for the trouble.

You need to install the package "unrar" to be able to unpack RAR
archives.
I agree it would be nice to have an option to automatically install
missing archive handling programs like we have it for multimedia codecs.
Since what you submitted is
I think that this could be inserted in the "100 papercuts" list:
obviously is not a bug, rar support is available in the repos and works
like a charm, but it's not immediate to new users how to get it, so
Linus is suggesting a behaviour as with mp3 files.
