Thanks bryce, but this problem happened also with compiz disabled.
Anyway I can't reproduce it.
An unknown package upgrade might have definitely fixed it.

Please look to bug #419264 - which is a high cpu issue but on compiz. A
kernel patch is proposed which seems to fix that one and maybe this one
as well. Leann Ogasawara posted a kernel built with this patch - please
test if you can and see if it resolves this bug as well.

I prefer to look at Xorg.0.log, searching for Chipset line. I find it
easier for newer chipsets like GM45 and Q45 wich has a pretty non-
descriptive ls
I'm with 2.8.1 and I don't have the problem.
So it must be triggered by another thing.
Close?

well, it can also be caused by the drm/mesa upload, which causes also
other problems!
I will now install the new xorg driver and eventually rollback before

I'm running it to see the cpu consumption.
Anyway after lost of reboots and a change the bug is vanished:
- uninstalled virtualbox 3 (deb from the site)
- removed the compiled kernel modules
This could be the problem, but I can't explain to myself why this
happened from the live cd too.
What I'l

Yep, and welcome to the X.org triage team!
Btw, for future reference you can learn the graphics card by looking at
the Lspci.txt file for the line that says "VGA compatible controller".
