Ok, the original bug was actually a seemingly out-of-date .pyc file (or a .pyc from another arch/python version), the one that dies on elif was fixed some time ago, and Riaan's problem seems to be running out of disk space. `rm ~/.config/menus/applications.menu` and then freeing up some disk space
