I can confirm it in Edgy using the PDF from the past. Attaching
screenshot. FWIW it looks exactly the same in Kpdf, but if imported
directly into Gimp it looks fine.

I'd say it's all the same issue, as everything exhibits identical
symptoms, and it couldn't really be caused by that many issues...
