I also experience similar problems, although I do not use freecell or
any games. Each time it happens the last message in dmesg is "pid.c:
Stale PID file, overwriting.". I also notice the screen flickers black
every now and then as if it is about to crash, but it doesn't most of
the time. Occasiona
Please disregard my post #17: the problem came back. Apparently I
fooled myself with 2 random successful logins in a row. It does NOT
matter which kernel version I boot with; I almost always get logged out
as soon as I log in.

I found a workaround for the problem on my second machine: after getting
the boot menu to show up, I found that booting to the prior kernel
version instead of the current kernel version makes everything work
fine. In other words, instead of booting the default:

I just encountered the same problem on another, much older computer on
which I had successfully been running Ubuntu 9.04 for about a month. I
upgraded to 9.10 but now about 4 times out of 5 I can't log in. When I
try, some kind of text appears very quickly (grey on a black
background), but is qui
Thanks Jani. Using your links I found

looks exactly like my problem with the game grabbing all the memory.

I suspect there may be different bugs concerning different people here.
It seems to me at least Anita ought to look at Bug #465317 and Bug

I believe I have found a workaround for my problem, and I'm hoping that
not only will this help other people work around it also, but it may
help developers track down the bug. What I did was enable the grub2
bootup menu that is hidden by default. Apparently Ubuntu 9.10 uses a
new bootloader cal
I am having a very similar problem with Ubuntu 9.10. About 2 out of 3
times when I log in, I see the graphics screen change quickly to a black
text-only screen, then I see some kind of text (maybe an error message)
print too quickly to read, then it pops right back to the graphical
login screen.

I am seeing this brand new bug also. After 20-30 minutes of use a

seen it a number of times while playing solitaire with wifi off and
nothing else running.

I just experienced the same problem... gnome just crashes and i find
myself on the login screen (almost seems like a logout, because it
doesn't blank the screen as if X crashed). Pulse Audio might be the
problem ... at least my /var/log/messages tells something suspicious.

I think my experience is the same as in this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/444518
I ran my system for a few hours, but after bringing up freecell for a
half hour, the crash happened. Xorg log showed this again: (WW)

It happened again when I was not running firefox. The Xorg.log might be
more helpful. I checked the old one against the current one and I will
post the part that comes at the end that is different. There is a
backtrace included:

No response?
This bug would make it impossible for me to recommend ubuntu to anyone.
A fix would be much appreciated.
