I'm afraid the problem is in the way laptops cope with backlight
management. Usualy the video chip is not the one signaling the backlight
off but the bios deals with powermanagement. This is the reason why
vbetool does work and DPMS from X.org doesn't, vbetool uses realmode but
X.org isn't able to

This problem also exists for the Trident Cyber 9525 (rev 25) graphics
card in the Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500 tablet PC. Tested on Ubuntu
7.10, package xserver-xorg-video-trident was version 1:1.2.3-1ubuntu1.
vbetool does turn off the backlight, xset dpms force off blanks the
