saods9 6.2+dfsg-2 was uploaded for Quantal which fixes the problem
there.

I can confirm this bug, ds9 fresh installed from Synatic on karmic beta
does not start. But SAO ds9 5.7 downloaded from the SAO homepage work
like a charm.

ds9 does not start. It fails with this message:
version conflict for package "Tcl": have 8.4, need 8.5
couldn't open "/usr/lib/tclIndex": no such file or directory
while executing
"open [file join $dir tclIndex]"
