I can confirm that this identical bug still exists with Thunderbird
v3.01 running on karmic with all its latest updates as of this writing.

t54 has the exact problem I have, and the same operating system.
I really hope this problem can be fixed -- as I have tried all the same fixes
as t54 and then some.

This static buzz bug still exists in Ubuntu Karmic using Thunderbird
version 2.0.0.23 (20090817).
Incoming mail event generates only static from all wave files tried -
and from the default system sound too when that is selected as the

I tried several different ways of getting them to work but nothing so
I've reverted back to using Evolution as the wav files now play on this
after some tinkering around.
