My mistake, the setting in the mouse properties applet for touch pad
left click on tap is set to off by default

I am running Karmic Beta 1, installed all updates, and my track pad is
not allowing left clicks by tapping the pad.

I got my hands on Alpha 3 just recently and gave it a spin, seems like
all is well now.
