This appears to be fixed in Ubuntu 9.10. There are plenty of underruns
now, but it no longer crashes the whole X server, and the underruns
would be Alsa's fault.

I did some experimenting, and found that if I stop gdm and run stepmania
with "sudo startx /path/to/stepmania" it doesn't crash.

I can confirm this on Jaunty and Ext3. StepMania (and the X server)
typically crashes half a minute into any song.

I'm also affected by this. I won't post my Xorg.log because I don't feel
that it provides any new information as it looks basically identical to
Colby's. Instead I've attached StepMania's crashinfo.txt which contains
some helpful debugging info.

Forgot to say that it completely crashes the computer, not only the xserver.
None of the console windows (Ctrl+Alt+number) work, and the computer has
absolutely no response.
I had to turn it off the hard way (pressing the on/off key for 2 -- i guess --
seconds)

I'm using Stepmania 3.9 and Ubuntu Jaunty x64 (AMD).
I can only play for about 2-3 minutes.

I can play stepmania under hardy and intrepid without problems.

I have the same problem. I can play usually a bit longer though. Maybe
10 - 30 minutes. Then I just get back to the login screen.
