The current arrangement is a loss of functionality. An older driver --
and many other drivers for other hardware -- was capable of creating a
:0.0 and a :0.1 which is what the X window system has supporte

Please file a bug upstream with the request to re-add this feature if
you'd like it. I wouldn't bother describing it as a regression; it's
been this way for quite some time now. The old zaphod mode was a total
hack-around
