Ah, yes, there is no SQUEAK_USERDIR equivalent on the squeak command line. The echoing of the command line is left-over debug code. The ubuntu packages are ancient, in more recent versions this is gone. -- etoys expects writeable /usr/share/etoys/My\ Squeak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395762

My mistake. Instead of editing the /usr/games/etoys script to remove -xshm , I ran the squeak command line directly - which left SQUEAK_USERDIR unset. Having the command line echoed on stdout makes that seem a plausible approach. I didn't see directories mentioned in the man page either and foun
