I recently backported a fix to the /usr/bin/etoys script to Jaunty.
Please let me know if you still encounter this problem in this version.

Ah, yes, there is no SQUEAK_USERDIR equivalent on the squeak command
line.
The echoing of the command line is left-over debug code. The ubuntu
packages are ancient, in more recent versions this is gone.

My mistake. Instead of editing the /usr/games/etoys script to remove -xshm , I
ran the squeak command line directly - which left SQUEAK_USERDIR unset. Having
the command line echoed on stdout makes that seem a plausible approach.

I'm pretty sure the "/usr/bin/etoys" script sets up a default directory
in the user's home. How were you trying to run Etoys?
