My guess is that Lonnie's system is based on perhaps an intel GPU and
the added support for DRI2 in the newer driver for it, is actually
responsible for the fix.

I'm no longer experiencing this. Perhaps something was repaired in the
"visual effects" aspects of ubuntu 9.10 that fixed the problem.
