solved it by reinstalling openoffice.org-core through apt.

I had a similar problem with karmic's amd64 version of oowriter
(1:3.1.1-1ubuntu2), except that there was no error message at all when I
ran oowriter from the command line. Running it from openoffice-org or
nautilus gave the error 'openoffice crashed... the following files will
be recovered' with a

fortunately I can use it again. I should have reported that earlier, since it
started working again a while ago already.
