Well, browser.link.open_external is the setting which had been removed
in 3.5.
You want to set browser.link.open_newwindow to "3" (I had 1 there).
Also, browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction=2 (I had this already, although
it was marked as customized in about:config).
See http://kb.mozillazine
I had browser.link.open_external set to "2" (in a new window), and now back to
the default (3) (in a new tab). Still the same behavior.

This is the result of a deliberate design decision in Firefox 3.5. There
used to be separate preferences for links opened in firefox and links
from external programs, but those two preferences have been merged. Lots
of people have complained.

which extension is the one that is upsetting it.

Thank you for the updated information. Sometimes Firefox profiles can become
corrupt. Could you please try this with a new profile and see if the problem
still exists? You do not need to delete your old profile to test.
firefox-3.5 -ProfileManager
This works properly for me in Firefox 3.5.

presumably invokes 'firefox http://example.com', this URL would open in
