On my Jaunty box, I installed only the Karmic kernel (linux-

packages being Jaunty-based, I can reproduce this same problem --

I ran out of ideas on how to investigate this bug, so I downloaded
Alternate KarmicA2 and installed that. This is it running now. A few kinks on
the install but not bad for this level. I don't much like Alternate but it at
least boots! The desktop karmic A2's don't on this i845g.

Geir,
I've never done ssh before. With your hints I got it going, added Option
ModeDbug True, then did
xinit X
which locked up the mouse and keyboard.
As you suspected, ssh was still running so I got the Xorg.0.log which is
attached.
It's a bit late here. I'll try the GPU dump tomorrow.

Geir,
Tried a simple:
xinit X
which ran for a little bit, some flashing of screen, then left me with a
command line prompt. Hooray, I can do something! Attached is the
Xorg.0.log from that.
There's lots of regs dumped at the end of the log.
Anything else to try?

Great work, Jerry. I actually misread your description in that I thought
you had access to a VT after the black screen even when running with the
intel driver. Great that you were able to get an Xorg.0.log anyway.
Usually when a black screen like that happens, the computer is not
completely dead,
Geir,
As soon as gdm starts it switches up a black screen and the pc stops
altogether. No keyboard keys do anything, example Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't do
anything, so there's no way to get into the system at all. The only key that
works is power off.
What I need is a way to start X without starting
jerrylamos, we really need /var/log/Xorg.0.log with the intel driver. It should
not be too hard to get that off a LiveCD. If you have a USB-stick, you may copy
it there. If you have network connection you may scp or ftp it somewhere. You
may even mount a hard drive partition and copy it there. I
