I have just installed the 2009-06-16 daily built of Karmic on my Acer
TravelMate 370.
The system goes into suspend mode at start-up with the lid open.
I can then resume operation OK.

As for the non-default gconf keys, setting
/apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_ac=blank
works around this issue.
