I submitted this bug in response to a question on answers.launchpad.net.
Since that time, I've been able to confirm another anomaly that I'm not
sure should be filed as a separate bug.

Right, but I am pretty sure that gedit does not handle its language
settings -- isn't that a toolkit-level feature, rather than an
application-level feature?

~/.gnome2/gedit-metadata.xml stores the seen documents with the last
know cursor position and the language highlight settings. It could
contain the document encoding. This is not trivial, but it is simple.

A valid bug, but I am guessing that persistent per-document language
settings is not a trivially fixable bug. Can someone comment on the
complexity of a fix for this issue?
