Update. Now the thing works! See output of pabrowse below.
I started using Network Manager (Gnome) again. Before I bypassed Network
Manager, using /etc/network/interfaces, because I'm affected by this annoying
problem:

However, I don't understand how pavucontrol is supposed to replace the
server selection of padevchooser. I looked around in pavucontrol and
found no way to select which server was used for sound output using
pavucontrol. Also only the sources and sinks on the machine
Padevchooser is deprecated in favour of pavucontrol.

I also disabled jaunty-backports and jaunty-proposed and downgraded all
packages to the "standard" jaunty version. It did not help, that I can
see at least. If I enable network sinks on Kexlerus, then pabrowse finds
