Fixed in recent updates, also fairly sure it was an nvidia bug, not
xchat.

I was using Consolas 8 in xchat-gnome, and other apps that use a fixed
width font. gnome-terminal, which I use regularly with Consolas 8, does
not exhibit this problem - ever, even when using irssi (another irc
application). Pidgin does not use the fixed width font, so I don't see
this issue.

I would also be interested if the exact same font and font size causes
problems in other applications like gnome-terminal, pidgin (Uses the
Document Font), etc. Sense the fonts are not free I haven't been able
to reproduce it, but I want to make sure we have all the facts before

Consolas for you if it was still set to default). Can you tell me what

Can I just change the font in Xchat-gnome's preferences instead? I can
do what you ask as well, just not sure that it really makes a
difference here.

Thank you! Sorry, I have one more thing for you to try. I noticed you
are using a third-party font. Could you, please, try changing your
fonts to the default Sans for Application, Document and Desktop font and
Sans Bold for Window title font. Leave the size the same, just change
the font. Then

output to from running "xdpyinfo" in a gnome-terminal, please? Also, a
screen shot of your font settings ("System -> Preferences -> Appearance
