I can also confirm the problem using 9.04 with a Intel i830 graphic controller
(w/Gnome).
Desktop effects are disabled.
If I change the font type under appearance it will fix the problem for a while,

I can confirm this in 9.10 Alpha 1, but not in 9.04. My laptop has an
Intel 915GM/910GML express graphic controller. Restarting solves the
problem for a time, but it eventually becomes garbled again. Sometimes

I have just installed it on another PC with different hardware, but the
same graphics card. There don't seem to be any display defects, I will

Okay. It doesn't appear to be a hardware problem. At this point, I
suspect KDE4's compositing or perhaps the underlying Xorg server, but,

I have now replaced the graphics card with an identical one. No apparent
change. I could try the same graphics card in another PC, but that would
take more time.

Desktop effects are not enabled, and I'm using the standard xorg driver.
After re-seating of the graphics card text is normal again. However
there are still some minor defects. For example when scrolling with the
mouse wheel, the scrollbar arrows disappear until I hover over the

Thanks for taking time to report this bug and help improve Ubuntu.
Are Desktop Effects enabled? Does this occur if you disable Desktop
Effects?
Are you using the binary ATI driver? Does this occur if you use the
standard Xorg driver for Radeon GPUs?
