Ittay, I would expect a kernel panic to leave traces in
/var/log/messages, /var/log/kern.log, /var/log/syslog, or
/var/log/debug.

Desktop effects are disabled. I have the Intel GM965 video card.
/var/log/messages doesn't contain anything special.
Maybe it is a kernel panic?
