Kubuntu 9.10 Check your Xorg log for complaints about GLX. In my case a package update removed the symbolic link from libglx.so to libglx.so.185.18.36 in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions. Restoring this link fixed the problem. -- [karmic] compositing disabled - effects could not be activated h
