This thread is very old and has accumulated lots of different problems
for different cameras. On top of that, Ubuntu has stopped using gnome-
volume-manager altogether.
Many cameras probably work in modern Ubuntu releases such as 8.04 LTS
and 8.10. If they still don't work for you in those release
Even though this is an old thread, I must say that I am too experiencing
problems with a Canon PowerShot A530 under Hardy. The camera doesn't
appear to get mounted at all, even though dmesg says:

on hardy I am using a Canon Powershot A400.
The f-spot-import command is not being run when the Camera is plugged
in.

I remember correctly (using Gutsy Gibbon now)

So, the current situation is still that manual import works, just the
dialog does not pop up after plugging in the camera.
