i installed both phonon-backend-xine and libxine1-ffmpeg
and it worked thanks to this forum... the error message is not really clear
is it?

It can not be set to default as it is a licensing issue for mp3. Canonical
currently ships a licensed version for gstreamer, but the latter is too buggy
to be suggested as the default sound engine to use with Amarok.
So, unless somebody pays the license costs for libxine, the user will have to

libxine1-ffmpeg was the missing piece.
Shouldn't that be a dependency, then? I can't imagine it's very useful
to ship Amarok unable to play MP3s by default. If it's a patent issue,
maybe there should be some sort of warning dialog on startup, or you
might see a lot of bug reports...

sounds like a missing codec problem.
