duplicate of bug 471774, so it is being marked as such. Please look at
I ran in this bug as well. Running "gksu update-manager" resulted in the
following error:
No such file or directory: '/home'
After re-creating the directory /home, update-manager ran successfully.
I had deleted the /home directory since all the user home directories
were stored under /data/home.

What happens if you run "gksu synaptic" ? Does that start up normally?
