I have exactly the same problem on the same laptop model( thinkpad x40,
2371) with Ubuntu 11.10. It might be gnome related problem, since I used
the same laptop with Kubuntu, and dont remember getting it.

Yes I have the restricted modules installed.
Also, the mouse pointer doesn't appear when the system freezes. I'm
getting stuck at the splash screen (Ubuntu logo with the progress bar).
