This helps. After changing it in gstreamer-properties to "X Window
Ssystem (no xv)" Totem works correctly, and after changing it in
SMPlayer to "x11 (slow)" SMPlayer displays videos OK.

Actually, if you run "gstreamer-properties" you get a nice way of
testing if it is xv only. Totem uses gstreamer by the way.
