changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed
This is the same issue, and possibly close enough to be a dupe, as described in
bug #59632.
Adding:
TLS_STARTTLS_PROTOCOL=SSL3
to my courier-imap config fixes the issue, but just as with Evolution, this is
a sub-optimal solution. Mail-notification should be fixed in the same way
