Thanks for your interest.
As I was not able to solve the problem, I abandoned the version of the
distro and KDE 4.
I went to GNOME ubuntu v 8.04 LTS, then to xubuntu 8.04 LTS.
This latter version "works as advertised" and "out of the box" so I have
kept using it.

Hey Alan, sorry it took so long for someone to get in contact with you
concerning this issue. Are you still experiencing these problems? I
haven't ever ran across this issue and haven't heard of anyone else
running across it either. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.
