lukyluke was right! After trying almost everything, I found that my PCM
was muted and it took a few seconds to fix running alsamixer from the
command prompt. Hope this solves everyone elses problem also.

I had the same problem.
I solved it by running alsamixer in a terminal window.
It looks that by default the PCM line of the sound card is muted. You can
change the volume with the arrows, you select the PCM column and use the up
arrow to increase the volume,

I had the same problem on a fresh install (but with a copy of my home
directory from the previous install), using the adobe flash plugin from
apt (flashplugin-installer). All other sound applications were working,
but not flash.
